MEDIA RELEASE                                                    November 6, 2024

For Immediate Release:

Purchase of land for potential 88-space Child Care Facility
& South-West Oxford Municipal Office in Mount Elgin

The Council of the Township of South-West Oxford, at its November 5th, 2024, regular meeting, approved the purchase of land for the possible construction of a new 88-space child care facility and South-West Oxford Municipal Office (CCFSWMO) at 324058 Mount Elgin Road, providing a more efficient and accessible space to deliver municipal services and support local families.

The purchase of the vacant property at 324058 Mount Elgin Road, as well as lots 66 and 67 and lots 1 through 4 of Phase 1 of the Mount Elgin Heights Subdivision will accommodate adequate square footage and parking for the potential new development. (see diagram 1).

“While the current Municipal Office has served the community for 75 years, Council recognizes that it is not meeting our needs very well now and that delaying action will only create further challenges in future,” says Township of South-West Oxford Mayor David Mayberry. “The new Municipal Office will provide a new, accessible central hub within our growing communities, address some of the space deficiencies that are impacting service delivery, and simultaneously offer a cost-effective opportunity to significantly improve child care availability for families.”

The Township has outgrown the current municipal office in Dereham Centre, constructed in 1949. The building has had several additions over the years and there is no further room to expand to accommodate staff, meetings and storage space. Relocating the municipal office to the water and sewer serviced village of Mount Elgin allows for greater square footage on the property, permitting a new daycare centre and other potential uses.

The land purchase will allow for future planning for the development of the site for the CCFSWMO.

The Township will pay $975,000.00 for all the land related to this project in the first quarter of 2025.
