A Message from Mayor Mayberry - July 2024
It is often said that change is the only constant. To that end, several changes are coming to SWOX. Over this summer, Council will consider amendments to the Township’s ward boundaries with the goal being to bring more proportionate representation to all SWOX residents. The public is encouraged to review the proposed changes and submit their comments.
Second, some of you will have seen Weber Contracting installing fiber optic cable in your area. Over the next 3 or 4 years we hope to provide fiber optics to every premise (residential and business) so that everyone can have access to excellent levels of internet speed and capacity. While this joint Federal-Execulink-SWOX project is (or will be) available to everyone, there is no obligation to use this service. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office or myself.
Finally, with the province bringing in "Producer Responsibility" for recyclables, there will be some major changes to our garbage and collection program. SWOX and Oxford County will no longer be able to collect residential recyclables (which is unfortunate since SWOX has one of the lowest contamination rates for recyclables in the province - congrats to staff and our residents). Oxford County is currently looking at possibly adding the collection of organics to our garbage service. As of now, we have no indication as to what the recycling program will be as in method(curbside or depot) or timing(weekly/biweekly). Until we know the particulars, likely later this fall, we are not sure whether SWOX will continue with collections. Stay tuned, more information will be available hopefully by the end of the year.
While we are sometimes reluctant to change, I am always reminded of the ancient Chinese proverb that says something to the effect "that those who can not adapt to change are either dead, or soon going to be".
Have a wonderful summer!
David Mayberry
