COVID-19 Update: Township Parks, Picnic Areas, Pavilions and Sports Fields open to the public effective Monday, June 8th, 2020

6/8/2020 2:07:03 PM

The Township of South-West Oxford is continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation in our region and proactively taking necessary steps to protect the health and safety of our residents and staff. Following the Provincial announcement on May 19th, 2020, the Township of South-West Oxford has made the decision to open some of our outdoor recreational amenities. Effective, Monday, June 8th, 2020 Township pavilions, picnic areas and sports fields (including, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic shelters, benches and green spaces) will be open for non-team use only.

Individuals may use these outdoor amenities for non-team sports; activities such as walking, running, biking, frisbee, kicking or throwing a ball and low contact racquet ball sports. Team sports are not permitted. Individuals that use these amenities must maintain a physical distance of at least two meters from any other person using the amenity (unless they are part of the same household).

The Township reminds residents that outdoor recreational amenities are not cleaned and disinfected. Individuals using these spaces should continue to practice physical distancing, limit contact with surfaces as much as possible and wash their hands thoroughly after using these spaces.

With these changes all outdoor playgrounds, play structures and equipment remain closed. Further, in accordance with the Province’s emergency order, individuals are still not permitted to have gatherings or events with more than ten people.

Mayor David Mayberry says that "while we recognize the mental and physical benefits of being active, we also realize the severe limitations of any plan for keeping our outdoor equipment and facilities cleaned and therefore ready for public use. Since we can not assure full public safety in regards to the cleanliness of facilities, we must continue to encourage our residents, in addition to physical distancing, to refrain from using them for the time being. We will let you know as soon as the equipment is safe to use."
